Course Objective

The major objective of this course is to provide students basic knowledge and skills to read and analyse the signs, symbols and images; In this context, the language of design and its translation into communication wiil be introduced and examined.

Course Content

Introduction to basic language of visual communication, semiology and related concepts such as indicator, series, array, surplus information, entropy, direct meaning and side meaning, expression, metaphor, metonim, ideology, representation, parody, coding, analysis and favour.

2 What’s communication; what’s visual communication; Why people need to communicate; reasons affecting perception
3 Old time visual communication samples: Ideographes, pictographes; prehistory visual communication; Mezopotamia and Egypt hieroglyphes, invention of calligraphy; invention of paper
4 The alphabets: Phoenice, Greek, Latin, Korean alphabets; effect of press on visual communication
5 Principles of design and visual communication
6 Visual perception: Gestalt, the difference between see and look
7 Visual communication and Semiology: Sign, symbol, index, icon
8 Symbols (I): What’s symbol? What’s the meaning of symbol?
9 Symbols (II): Examing the symbols and signs in terms of semantics
10 Symbols (III): Abstracting and meaning; abstracting in visual communication
11 Symbols (IV): Piktograms
12 Language of graphic design (I): Representation and abstracting
13 Language of graphic design (II): Indirect remark, metaphor, satire, irony in visual communication
